Apply narrative theory to the opening scenes of Attack The Block and Slumdog Millionaire

Attack The Block In the opening scene of ATB it includes the theory by Claude Levi-Strauss of binary opposites. He believes that all narratives have to be driven forward by a conflict that was caused by a series of opposing forces, e.g. a hero and a villain, until finally a sort of balance between them, or a resolution is achieved.

In ATB the binary opposites are between older and youth until they have to come together at the end to save the block. Sam is shown as a positive and good character from her character expression and movement, the way she is on edge with all of the banging and shouting. also the way she dresses in light coloured clothing resembling a well behaved upstanding character. whereas the youths are wearing very dark and covered clothing resembling negative and bad behavour. they are also very confident and almost arrogant about themselves and making out that they run the block even tho they are just teenages. Todorovs theory is a circular narrative including a equilibrium - distruption - recognition - attempt to fix -new equilibrium. in ATB the circular narrative is: equlibrium- the gang robbing people and walking round the streets (block) at night causing trouble. Sam going to work and coming back to her flat. distruption- is when this alien like thing falls from the sky allowing sam to escape from the gang, then the gang go chase after it and kill it. recognition- when Ron sees hundreds of these monsters falling from teh sky again just after the gnag killed the first one and they know there is something bad about to happen. attempt to fix- when the gang and sam work together and come up with aplan to get rid of all of these mosters that are killing poeple in there block. new equilibrium- the gang and sam all get along together and everything get back to normal. Slumdog Millionaire claude levi-strauss theory applied to slumdog millioanire: Interigtion- jamal and the police officer His life- jamal and salim/manan The show- jamal and prem kumar In all three story lines its jamal againts someone that is viewed as stronger and more powerful than him usually because are older, however jamal always prooves that wrong by winning against them. showing that he is a very stong and independent main character. Todorovs therory equilibrium- jamal and his brother samilm living in the slums playing with there friends and running away from police. (even from a young age he was already getting himself into trouble) distruption- his mother gets killed and there home is detroyed to him and Salim have to run of and fend for themselves attemps to fix- he goes on the show 'who wants to be a millionaire' to try and find his true love Latika. new equlibrium- jamla and latika finally find each over againa and they live a traditianal happy ever after.
